DATTA Vic Starstruck Season Opener

15 teams from around Melbourne competed at the 2016 Starstruck season opener at Camberwell High School.  The season opener brought a whole new level of energy to VEX Robotics in Australia. Out of the 15 Teams 10 had never competed in a VEX event before. That did not stop them from pushing hard and dominating the event. The new teams  from Highvale College showed   incredible programming skill, will all four teams having the most consistent autonomous runs in the tournament. A group of year 7 students from Camberwell High School held their own all the way to the semi-finals where they were up against last years Australian Champions for Hillcrest College.  Over the course of the tournament we saw robots evolve from have no autonomous programming to being able to score 4 stars in 15 seconds.  The new teams left the tournament with a new understanding of robotics and teamwork. The veteran teams were able to refine their skills and help mentor all of their new robotics colleagues.

Each team played a total of 15 matches over the course of the day as they worked their way to the finals. At the qualify the 2015 Australian champions, Hillcrest College held  the top of the ranks, followed by the veteran team from Emmaus College. Their ranks held true with both teams making it all the way to the finals. In the end Hillcrest with their alliance partner from Highvale College was able to take home the title of Tournament Champions.  Along with winning the tournament, Hillcrest impressed the judges with their designs and build quality. This combination resulted in Hillcrest winning the Excellence Award, The highest award that can be won in Vex robotics tournament.

A special thanks needs to go out to our sponsors. We would not have been able to run this tournament without the help of DATTA Victoria, Autodesk or Creature Technologies. Your support has greatly enhanced the learning and experience of all the students involved. We also need to thank our volunteers, it would have been impossible to run this event without all of your hard work.

Great opening event, thank you Travis. Always good to see how robots grow and develop over a tournament. I liked the way teams became much more strategic in their planning and game play in the elimination matches. I was proud of our Emmaus team that is made up of year 8 students, most of them competing in their first official VEX tournament with a robot they started building from scratch at the beginning of term 3.
