Maribyrnong College Tournament

We just saw another great day of robotics at Maribyrnong College. Maribyrnong saw 18 teams playing VEX In The Zone and 4 teams playing VEX Ring Master. Teams traveled from around greater Melbourne to put the latest iterations of their robots to the test. It was amazing to see how much progress teams have made since their last tournament at RMIT.

The VEX IQ Ringmaster field was a real highlight at the tournament. The 4 year 7 teams from St Mary’s Coptic College, Maribyrnong College and Copperfield College showed some of the best team work I have ever seen at at a VEX tournament. Between the Teamwork challenge and the robot skills challenge the teams took a 2 hour to work together upgrading everyone's robots. To see so much collaboration between competitors was amazing to see. At the end of the tournament St Mary’s 3048z and Maribyrnong 3032z walked away with with the teamwork prize. And St Mary’s 3048y took home robot skills.

The fast paced VEX In The Zone games were extraordinary to watch. The robots have evolved by leaps and bounds since the September RMIT tournament. Almost every team came to play with an entirely re-developed robots. It is incredible how students can design completely different robots from one another to solve the same problem. At the end of the day the tournament champions were an alliance made out of both Hillcrest teams and an Emmaus team. Hillcrest 7479A also took home the Excellence Award  for their over all achievements in the tournament, design and robot skills. A special mention needs to go out to Copperfield College who awed the judges with the most comprehensive engineering notebook that they have ever seen and for taking home the robot skills award.

We would not have been able to run such a great tournament without the support of our volunteers, Maribyrnong College and our facilities coordinator Rianne Burroughs.

VEX IQ Nationals in Wangaratta

At the VEX IQ Nationals held in Wangaratta an exciting competition unfolded. Students started the day by submitting their engineering book for the Design award and STEM project. The judges then interviewed each team and heard all the wonderful things the students have been working on. Both sections were taken out by Team 10911

The Skills Challenge then took place with students scoring points in a 1 minute autonomous challenge and individual 1 minute driver challenge.  The scores are then combined to get the overall winner. The scores were very close for the driver section with teams scoring 28-31 points. In the autonomous section team 10911 scored a massive 29 points.

Then the tournament began. Teams competed with each other to gain a combined score that goes towards and individual teams total throughout the tournament. The top 4 teams then competed in the finals. The finals were played by 10911 and 11123A up against 11123B and 51180A. The alliance with the highest score at the end of the final series wins the Teamwork Challenge award and was  11123B and 51180A.

The judges award went to team 11123A for all their hard work in all areas and their overall sportsmanship.

The overall Excellence award was awarded to team 10911 for their work across all areas of the competition.

By winning the Excellence Award 10911 have been invited to compete at the World Championships for VEX Robotics.

Congratulations to all students that participated, having the motivation and enthusiasm to be involved and complete the problem is half way to success.

Starstruck Australian Nationals!

We have got final confirmation today that the Australian VEX Nationals will be held at Galen Catholic College in Wangaratta, Victoria.  We are very happy to be partnering with Galen Catholic College to promote VEX Robotics, especially in Rural Victoria. This tournament will be open to all EDR and IQ teams from across Australia. Currently both the Excellence awards for VEX IQ and VEX EDR will qualify teams for the 2017 World Championships in Louisville, Kentucky. The National Championships will be held on Saturday December 3rd of this year. DATTA Victoria and DATTA ACT will be organizing buses to and from the event and we have arranged for accommodations near the venue.

If you are in the Wangaratta region and interested in being involved with VEX robotics please contact us.
